10 Common Dog Health Issues and Their Signs

Dental Disease: Bad breath, yellow or brown buildup on teeth, difficulty eating, and bleeding gums are signs of dental disease, which can lead to serious complications if untreated.

Ear Infections: Signs include head shaking, scratching at the affected ear, bad odor from the ear, redness, and discharge. Ear infections can be painful and may cause hearing loss if not treated.

Obesity: Excess weight can lead to several health problems in dogs, including diabetes, heart disease, and joint issues. Signs of obesity include difficulty in seeing the waist, reluctance to move, and shortness of breath.

Fleas and Ticks: Excessive scratching, hair loss, red or irritated skin, and the presence of fleas or ticks in the fur are indicators. Fleas and ticks can transmit diseases and lead to serious health issues.

Arthritis: Limping, difficulty moving, reluctance to jump or climb stairs, and apparent pain when touched or moving are signs of arthritis, a common issue in older dogs.

Diarrhea and Vomiting: Frequent vomiting or diarrhea can indicate gastrointestinal issues, which might be caused by infections, poisoning, or dietary indiscretions. Persistent symptoms require veterinary attention.

Heartworm Disease: This is transmitted by mosquitoes and can be fatal. Symptoms include coughing, fatigue, weight loss, and difficulty breathing. Prevention is key, as treatment can be complex and costly.

Skin Issues (Allergies, Hot Spots): Signs include scratching, red patches, hair loss, and possibly the presence of scabs or scales. Allergies, parasites, or infections can cause skin problems.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Difficulty urinating, frequent urination, bloody or cloudy urine, and urinating in unusual places can indicate a UTI or other urinary system issue.

Parvovirus (Parvo): A highly contagious virus especially dangerous for puppies. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea (often bloody), lethargy, and loss of appetite. Vaccination is crucial to prevent this disease.
